The Laker ski team kicked off their race season with a four-team competition on Thursday the 10th at Cannonsburg. The Laker’s raced against Rockford and Grand Rapids Catholic Central/West Catholic, and the Coop team formed by Cedar Springs, Greenville, and Kenowa Hills. The Laker girls placed 1st in the Slalom and 3rd in the Giant Slalom. Brooklyn Verplank led the team with a 4th place finish in the Slalom and 7th in the Giant Slalom. She was followed by Avery Kuhlman with a 6th in the Slalom and 10th in GS. Freshman Addy Maloney finished with a 9th and 10th, Isabelle Sandy had a 9th and 15th, Sadie VanderHeide had a 15th and a 13th, and Jessie Whitmore had a 23rd in Giant Slalom. The boys team finished 3rd in both disciplines. Senior Drew Fox led the way in Slalom with a 4th place finish. He was followed by fellow Seniors Jack Laughlin in 11th, Hale Phillips in 17th, Hudson Braak in 19th, Eli Zuelke in 20th, and Sophomore Thomas Redeker in 20th. First year racer Brett Gwinupp finished 8th in the Junior Varsity Slalom. Hale Phillips led a tightly packed group in the Giant Slalom with an 11th place finish. Fox and Laughlin were close behind him in 12th and 14th . Redeker finished in 18th followed by Zuelke in 19th, and Gwinupp in 20th. First year racer Hudson Braak finished in 9th place in the JV Giant Slalom race. The Lakers will be back in action on Tuesday at Cannonsburg.
