The Spring Lake varsity volleyball team battled hard in a tough matchup against Zeeland East but ultimately fell in three closely contested sets, 28-26, 25-12, and 25-23. The Lakers came out strong in the first set, playing some of their best volleyball of the season. They scored consistently through aggressive attacks and solid blocks, pushing Zeeland East to the limit. However, a missed serve gave Zeeland East the deciding point, leading to a heartbreaking 28-26 loss. The second set proved more challenging, with Spring Lake struggling to find momentum and falling behind early, resulting in a 25-12 defeat. Despite a late push in the third set, where the Lakers rallied back, they came up just short, losing 25-23. Katherine Penning led the team in kills with 6, while Aliya Williams, Brianna Kirby, Abbey Rogalski, and Brooke St. George each added 4 kills. Kirby, Lauren Nicles, Madeline Meigs, and Penning each contributed an ace. Audrey Marine was the primary playmaker with 11 assists, followed by Peyton Hein with 9. Defensively, Marine led with 10 digs, and Rogalski and Kirby both had 3 blocks at the net. Reflecting on the match, head coach remarked, "We played some of our best volleyball in the first set, scoring on attacks and blocks, only to miss a serve giving them point 27. We seem to have problems starting the second set, always playing behind." With this loss, Spring Lake's record moves to 7-18 overall and 2-7 in the conference. The Lakers will look to rebound in their next match, an away game against Holland on Thursday, October 22 at 6:00 p.m.
