The Spring Lake varsity volleyball team had a night of mixed results in their recent competition, securing a solid win against Whitehall before falling to a tough Coopersville team. In their match against Whitehall, Spring Lake came out strong with a dominant first set, winning 25-10. Although they stumbled in the second set, losing 18-25, the team quickly regrouped and closed out the match with decisive victories in the third and fourth sets, 25-6 and 25-17, respectively. The Lakers’ passing and serving were particularly sharp in this match, with their ability to execute on offense being a key factor in the win. However, Coopersville proved to be a challenging opponent. Spring Lake struggled against their tough serving, which impacted the Lakers’ passing and ability to maintain offensive momentum. After a tough 25-3 loss in the first set, the Lakers fought back but ultimately dropped the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-23. Katherine Penning led the offense with 17 kills on the night, followed by Aliya Williams with 12 and Brianna Kirby with 10. Kirby was also a force at the service line, racking up 8 aces, while Lauren Nicles, Brooke St. George, and Audrey Marine each contributed 3 aces. Marine set up the attack with 22 assists, while Peyton Hein added 15. Defensively, Nicles led with 20 digs, and Williams posted 5 blocks to anchor the net. Head coach noted the difference in performance between the two matches, saying, "Passing and serving was very strong against Whitehall. Our increased passing allowed us to run our offense successfully. Passing disappeared against Coopersville due to their tough serving." Spring Lake's overall record now stands at 7-17, with a conference record of 2-6. The Lakers will look to bounce back in their next match on Thursday, October 15, when they host Zeeland East at 6:00 p.m.
