The Spring Lake varsity volleyball team had a challenging day at their home quad this past Saturday, finishing with a 1-2 record. The Lakers started strong, defeating Charlotte in three sets, 25-18, 25-14, 25-18, before falling to Livonia Stevenson in four sets, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-15, and then to state-ranked Plainwell in straight sets, 25-14, 25-14, 25-11. The day’s results move Spring Lake’s overall record to 5-15. Brooke St. George led the Lakers offensively with 25 kills and 7 aces, while Katherine Penning added 18 kills and 9 aces. Brianna Kirby contributed 11 kills and 4 aces. Peyton Hein orchestrated the attack with 56 assists throughout the day. On defense, Lauren Nicles stood out with 31 digs, followed closely by Selah Kobylak with 24 and Penning with 21. At the net, Aliya Williams recorded 5 blocks. The Lakers came out aggressive in their victory over Charlotte, with tough serving making the difference. However, Livonia Stevenson’s consistent hitting wore them down in the second match. Facing Plainwell, ranked 6th in the state in Division 2, Spring Lake struggled to defend against a high-powered offense. The Lakers will look to regroup on Tuesday, October 1, when they travel to Zeeland West for a 6:00 p.m. match.
