Varsity girls volleyball falls in home opener to tough Unity Christian

In their home opener, the Spring Lake High School girls' varsity volleyball team fell to the Unity Christian Crusaders in a hard-fought four-set match, marking the start of their league play. Unity Christian took the match with scores of 23-25, 25-21, 23-25, and 10-25. Despite a close contest in three of the four sets, Spring Lake struggled to maintain momentum in the final set. The loss drops the Lakers to an overall record of 2-7 and 0-1 in conference play. Katherine Penning and Madeline Meigs led the Lakers offensively, each recording 8 kills. Peyton Hein contributed 14 assists, while Rilee Sabo added 13. Penning also stood out defensively, leading with 6 digs, followed by Lauren Nicles and Madeline Meigs, who tallied 3 digs each. Nicles also made an impact from the service line with 3 aces, while Aliya Williams added 2 aces and 2 blocks. The Lakers look to bounce back in their next match on September 10, when they will host a double duel against Fruitport and Reeths Puffer at 5:00 p.m.
